Amid the dramatic Sona Comstar succession feud, businessman Sunjay Kapur’s mother Rani Kapur has formally written to the UK authorities seeking a more in-depth probe into his death in London.

The mystery behind Sunjay Kapur’s sudden death during a polo match on June 12 of Sunjay Kapur has only deepened amid a full-blown family feud over a Rs 30,000-crore business empire.

Now, Rani Kapur’s criminal complaint in the United Kingdom has triggered international scrutiny over her son’s death. Sources privy to the development told News18 that she has lodged the complaint, calling into question the “mysterious circumstances” in which he was found dead and has urged the intervention of British law enforcement.

Another person privy to the development said a similar request may be moved before US authorities as he was an American national.

‘STILL DON’T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO MY SON’

A few days ago, in her first statement since Sunjay Kapur’s death, Rani Kapur raised the stakes amid the high-profile family feud by saying she still does not know what happened to her son. She said she is old and needs closure before she dies, and wants the family business and legacy to be passed on.

“I still don’t know what happened to my son. I’m old now and need closure before I go. I may be old and frail now, but my memory of being with my husband when Sona (Sona Comstar) was set up is strong. I remember the early days of Sona (Sona Comstar), built with care, sacrifice and love,” she told news agency ANI.

She added: “I am here to remind the world that our family legacy must not be lost. It must be passed on as my husband always wanted to be. Given my health and my age, I will not be making any further comments. My legal team will address everything necessary.”

In her complaint letter to the UK authorities, which was accessed by News18, Rani Kapur has said there is “credible evidence” that Sunjay’s death was not natural or an accident but “foul play”.

“I am compelled to bring to your urgent attention that credible and concerning evidence has surfaced indicating that his (Sunjay Kapur) death may not have been natural or accidental, but may in fact have involved foul play, including the possibility of murder, abetment, conspiracy, fraud, and forgery, some elements of which…appear to have occurred within the United Kingdom and, more particularly, within the jurisdiction of Surrey police,” the letter stated.

The letter further said there are certain records and facts pointing to “prima facie forged legal and financial documents, dubious asset transfers etc”, which Rani Kapur has had access to since his death. These, she said, indicate “coercion or collusion between individuals who stood to gain financially from his demise”.

She said she has “strong reasons” to believe that Sunjay’s death “may have been facilitated as part of a coordinated transactional conspiracy with the involvement of individuals and entities located in the UK, India and maybe the United States”.

Hence, she said, she is seeking an investigation into a murder and conspiracy angle to Sunjay’s death. She further requested the authorities to seize CCTV footage, medical and documentary records, digital communication from the crime scene, and even liaise with Indian and American authorities where relevant so as to probe an international angle to the crime. She also asked for a forensic audit of her son’s financial and legal affairs in the UK following his death.

    SONA COMSTAR VS RANI KAPUR

A former chairperson of Sona Comstar herself, Rani Kapur’s remarks come at a time when the company has asserted that she has neither direct nor indirect involvement in its affairs since 2019. Her statements, however, appear to contest this narrative.

The ongoing dispute escalated when Sona BLW Precision Forgings Ltd, the listed arm of the group, issued a sharp rebuttal. In a regulatory filing with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the company dismissed her claims as “baseless” and “legally untenable,” reiterating that she holds no position or authority within the organisation.

Before her public appearance, she had reportedly addressed a letter to the board alleging that she was coerced into signing documents behind locked doors shortly after her son’s death – an episode she described as “highly suspicious”.

She further claimed she was denied access to her own bank accounts and left financially dependent on a few individuals. According to her, no one was authorised to represent the Kapur family on the board.

Despite her request to postpone the Annual General Meeting, the company proceeded with it as scheduled. In response, Sona Comstar has served Rani Kapur with a legal notice, demanding she cease spreading what the company calls “false and damaging information”. The notice strongly refutes her allegations of mismanagement and coercion, calling them “malafide, false, unwarranted, and uncorroborated”.
