Prince Harry and Meghan Markle never fail to make the headlines. More recently, the royal couple were seen together at the Invictus Games, which started in Vancouver recently with great excitement and energy. At the event, Duchess of Sussex- Meghan was all smiles, as she was seen with Prince Harry. The Duke and Duchess looked quite happy, and they were also seen engaging in public display of affection (PDA).
Meghan and Harry were seen walking hand in hand; at one moment, the couple was also seen kissing and encouraging each other.
However, amid rumours of trouble in their marriage and divorce, Harry and Meghan’s PDA seemed a bit odd. More recently, US President Donald Trump also commented on Prince Harry’s relationship with Meghan thus hinting at trouble in their marriage. In an interview with the New York Post, when Donald Trump was asked if Prince Harry will be deported from the US due to his Visa issues, “I don’t want to do that…I’ll leave him alone. He’s got enough problems with his wife. She’s terrible.”

And so, on one hand Harry and Meghan’s PDA at Invictus Games showed that the couple is quite happy thus negating rumours of their separation; while on the other hand, it felt as if they were doing it deliberately and trying too hard to prove their love for each other.

    The psychology behind PDA

One’s body language often gives away their hidden feelings and thoughts. And so, decoding one’s body language can help understand a person and their connection with others. For couples, it is often believed that those who indulge in excessive PDA are very happy in their relationship. However, studies show that this common belief might not always be true.
A research published in the Journal of Sex Research shows that young people engage in “performative” affection frequently, but the reasons for it is not always genuine emotional connection.
Also, constant PDA mainly serves two purposes for couples:
    1. For couples who are in the early stages of their relationship, PDA conveys their commitment to each other. However, this decreases significantly in couples after marriage, as per a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
    2. For couples who engage in PDA excessively, it may reflect their insecurity in the relationship. And so, for some couples PDA serves as a way of overcompensation for underlying fears in their relationship.
And so, psychology suggests that couples who appear to be too happy to others and indulge in excessive PDA may not necessarily be happy together.
