Nottingham Forest: Jair Cunha joins Premier League side from Botafogo

Nottingham Forest have completed the signing of Brazilian defender Jair Cunha from Botafogo.

The 20-year-old has signed a five-year deal at the City Ground until at least the summer of 2030.

Cunha joined Botafogo in February and played at the Club World Cup, scoring in the 2-1 win against Seattle Sounders.

He is Forest’s second signing from Botafogo inside a week after Brazilian striker Igor Jesus joined for a reported £10m.

“Jair is a young talent who has shown quality during his time in Brazil, and we are happy to have secured his signature,” said Forest chief football officer Ross Wilson.

“Jair has flourished in Brazil and now has new ambitions as he moves to the Premier League. We know he will be warmly welcomed into the group here in Nottingham.”

Cunha started his career at Santos where he made 24 appearances for the club before joining Botafogo.

He has eight appearances for Brazil at under-20 level, helping his nation win the U20 South America Championship earlier this year.

Cunha’s arrival comes as Forest ponder exits for Anthony Elanga and Morgan Gibbs-White.

Newcastle have agreed a £55m deal with Forest for Sweden winger Elanga, while Tottenham are hoping to sign England midfielder Gibbs-White for £60m.
